Originally a trained nurse, working for many years as an International Business Development Manager, I decided to have a career change after being successfully treated in 2015 by Clare Heal, a very experienced Amatsu therapist, for hip and knee problems.

I was amazed that these problems went after about 3 to 4 sessions. The gentleness and effectiveness of the treatment convinced me to train as practitioner.

I am a fully qualified Amatsu Therapist and studied with Jane Langston at the award-winning Amatsu Training School near London and have taken the Amatsu Level 1 (Anma) Exam in 2016 and the Amatsu Level 2 (Seitai) Exam in 2017, both with distinction. I completed my studies in April 2019 for Amatsu Level 3 (Shinden) course.

I am fully insured, DBS/CRB checked, First Aid trained and a full member of Amatsu Japanese Integrated Medicine.


This is a question that I get asked a lot when I’m treating! Although Amatsu is completely explainable in scientific and energetic terms, most of my clients have no idea why I am doing what I’m doing and how it makes them feel better.

Why do I always check their pelvis even though they have a neck problem?

Why are their big toes so important that I always check them at least twice?

Why do I lift their arms and legs?

Although I try to answer as many questions as possible, during a treatment session I am concentrating on the person I am working with and can’t get into too much detail. So, for my more curious clients, here are a few explanations of why I’m doing what I’m doing..!


Many of you know that I always start here, gently checking the balance of your pelvis. In Amatsu, we view the pelvis as of (quite literally) central importance. It is the centre of your body, the meeting point of your spine and your lower body so any imbalance here can affect your whole body. Our pelvis is affected by things like sitting cross-legged, carrying children on a hip, too little activity and exercise, bad posture and a whole host of other factors. So that’s why I always start there even if you have a dodgy knee!


With their relatively small surface area, they carry our body weight around all day long. We cram them into ill-fitting shoes or socks, wear high heels, stand too long and take very little notice of what is such an important part of the body. Our big toe in particular is of utmost importance and in Japan it is considered good healthcare practice to keep the big toe fluid and mobile by gently rotating it. If our big toe loses its freedom to move, we start to walk differently to compensate. When we do that, over time we put pressure on other joints higher up the body. Knee or hip pain may have started due to a foot problem or bad walking pattern. So big toes really matter!


The part of the treatment some of my clients find a little strange is when I lift their arms and legs in different combinations and ask them to hold them briefly in position. Why do I test individual muscles? Well, it’s not actually about the individual muscles and whether they are “strong”. It’s more about the holistic view of a person’s body. With any pain or injury we adapt to cope with what hurts. We move differently to reduce the soreness and so what started out as a shoulder problem for example, may also start to involve our neck too as we compensate. Amatsu always looks at the bigger picture – your whole body – not just where it hurts and these tests allow me to see which other parts of the body are affected. So hopefully that gives a little more information about some of the things I do in an Amatsu treatment!
