What to Expect During an Amatsu Treatment
Stephan Grabner, Amatsu Therapist at the Amatsu Centre in Abergavenny explains what to expect during an Amatsu treatment.
A lot of people ask me, “What are you doing during a treatment?” Amatsu therapy is based on both science and energy, and while I’m focussed on treating you, it can be hard to explain everything in detail. For those who are curious (or anyone thinking about trying Amatsu), here’s a simple look at what happens during a treatment and why it helps your body.
The Main Parts of an Amatsu Treatment
Amatsu therapy helps bring your body back into balance by working on different areas that are important for your health. Our bodies are complex, and different areas affect each other in ways we may not always realise. Here’s how we approach treatment at the Amatsu Centre to help your body function as best as it can:
-
Your Pelvis: The Body’s Foundation
Every treatment starts with checking your pelvis. The pelvis is the centre of your body, where your spine meets your lower body. If your pelvis is out of balance, it can affect everything else, causing problems throughout your body. Factors like sitting cross-legged, carrying heavy bags on one side, bad posture, or not getting enough exercise can all throw your pelvis off balance. These small habits we develop in our daily lives can have a big impact over time.
By gently checking and adjusting your pelvis, we create a strong foundation that can help with issues like knee pain, back pain, and even problems in the neck and shoulders. When your pelvis is balanced, the rest of your body has the support it needs to function properly. We focus on making sure your pelvis is aligned so that your body can stay in balance, reducing stress on other areas.
-
Our Feet: The Importance of Big Toes
We often forget about our feet, even though they play a huge role in supporting us and helping us move. Our feet deal with a lot of pressure from walking, wearing tight shoes, and standing for long periods. In Amatsu, we pay special attention to the big toe. In Japan, keeping the big toe flexible is considered very important because if it can’t move well, it changes the way we walk. This can lead to more pressure on other parts of the body, like the knees, hips, and back.
The way we walk affects everything. If our feet are not functioning properly, it causes a chain reaction. Making sure your big toes are flexible helps keep you pain-free and moving comfortably. This small adjustment can make a big difference, preventing problems from developing further up in the body. We also look at the other parts of your feet to make sure they are supporting you properly, which helps improve overall balance and comfort.

Muscle Testing: Looking at the Bigger Picture
Another part of the treatment that can seem strange is muscle testing—where I lift your arms or legs and ask you to hold them in certain positions. These tests aren’t about seeing how strong your muscles are, but about understanding how well your whole body is working together. When you have pain or an injury, you often change the way you move to avoid hurting yourself, which can cause other issues.
For example, if you have a shoulder problem, you might change your posture without even realising it, which can lead to neck pain or back pain. Our goal is to understand how your body is adapting and to restore overall balance, not just treat the spot that hurts. By testing your muscles in different positions, we can see which parts of your body are compensating and which areas need more attention. This helps us create a treatment that looks at the bigger picture, rather than just focusing on one area of pain.
Muscle testing also helps us understand the connections in your body. Everything is connected, and sometimes pain in one area is the result of an issue somewhere else. By identifying these connections, we can address the root cause of the problem, helping you feel better and move more easily.
The Holistic Approach of Amatsu Treatments
Amatsu therapy looks at your whole body instead of just focusing on where it hurts. When you come in with pain, it’s easy to want to treat just that spot, but that’s not always the best way to solve the problem. By checking your pelvis, feet, and muscle function, we try to find the real cause of the pain, whether it comes from imbalances, habits, or the way your body is compensating.
Our goal is to help your whole body work better together. Sometimes, pain is a result of your body trying to adapt to something else that isn’t working properly. By taking a holistic approach, we can help your body find its natural balance again. This means not only treating the pain but also helping to prevent it from coming back in the future. We want to help you move better, feel better, and live without pain.
